I was sweeping my porch a few days ago.
Whenever you sweep something outside questions always arise. It seems futile. It seems really not worth doing because we all know that leaves will continue to fall and even a well swept porch will find itself covered amongst leaves shortly after a good cleaning.
As I was sweeping, I asked myself these questions. Why am I doing this? Why is a porch that will be dirty again worth sweeping?
Then the answer hit me.
I believe in a leaf free porch, because I know how good it can be. So I’ll sweep the porch because it’s worth it to me. Even if I know it will become dirty.

That’s when it hit me. That’s grace. That’s love.
That’s so many concepts that seem so abstract until you’re sweeping your porch.
Sometimes it’s relieving to remember that someone believes you’re worth sweeping, because they know how good you can be with a little help.
These two women came from the Netherlands to run in the marathon today. Instead of moping about the event being cancelled, they spent their time volunteering on Staten Island. Saw so many people in running gear today, helping New Yorkers remove debris from their houses. Makes sense— because nobody who signed up for a marathon is afraid of hard work.
