Afternoon cover music. I have a particular attachement to the song Sigh No More. The title comes from a line in Much Ado about Nothing. In Act II Balthasar, when lamenting the nature of men utters this line. Another famous lyric from this song, “oh man is a giddy thing” comes from the end of the play.
There’s something about coming home. A comfort that returns when you head back to grounds you’ve walked before.
D.C. is a complicated place. Anyone that tells you with certainty they have an answer doesn’t. I picked this picture to capture D.C. for a number of reasons. This was the morning of the much debated Obamacare decision by the Supreme Court. I walked outside of my apartment a block away and could hear people yelling. I walked over and found this. The yelling got louder. It was a strange experience. People had so much of their identity staked out in winning or losing this decision. This picture captures that moment and all the protesters but also this dude to the bottom right. He makes this picture. His body language is verbose. You can tell he’s taking it all in and doesn’t quite know what to make of the situation. Maybe he was just tired. Or maybe he was tired of seeing people place their identity in this 10,000 page piece of legislation and in their political views. I’m not sure but it was an interesting morning.
“We live by stories. It’s the principle by which we organize our experience and thus derive our sense of who we are. We’re in an unceasing flow of time and events and people, and to make sense of what goes past, we put a beginning and an end to a certain thing, and we leave things out and we heighten other things, and in that way we break the unbroken flow into stories, because that’s the only way we can give it significance.”

In the Dark

Electric power was restored Wednesday in India after two horrendous blackouts. You might not have heard about it, but you should have. Ten percent of the worlds population lost power in the blackout. That’s roughly 670 million people. Many have attributed the black out to the political culture in India. A country that while growing is experiencing the awkward middle school years induced by globalization and an over focus on business. This focus has caused a large gap between the business world which receives priority from the government with regards to funding and the actual population which lags substantially behind. These large gaps between the perception of India as a growing global power (which it is don’t get me wrong) and the reality on the ground will continue to plague the country until a larger rising tide of infrastructure enhancements, educational changes, and increased economic oppertunity arrives.
New Delhi has gone out of its way to make life better for big businesses, granting them access to easy credit, dedicated power plants, and protection against currency fluctuations. That is a problem because India’s big-business sectors, such as mining, land development, and infrastructure, are its most corrupt.“ -Foreign Affairs
Afternoon cover music from Bon Iver. Bon Iver takes it’s name from a French phrase bon hiver meaning “Good Winter”. If his voice were a season it would certainly be winter.
